Xinhua, March 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Italian government expressed sorrow over the explosions at the Belgian national airport of Zaventem in Brussels and the Maelbeek metro station on Tuesday morning, and tightened security measures at Italian airports and key locations, local reports said.

"I am with my heart and mind in Brussels," Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said in a statement posted online.

"I am following with bated breath the developments in Brussels and I am united around the people and the Belgian government," said Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

The Foreign Ministry warned Italian nationals in Brussels not to go to places of public gathering.

Italian Interior Minister Angelino Alfano called a meeting of the national committee on order and public security to evaluate "additional enforcement and preventive measures" against terrorist threat.

According to media reports, at least 26 people were killed and 136 injured in the explosions at the airport and on a city subway train. Endit
