Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipila strongly condemned the explosions in Brussels on Tuesday.

In a statement issued by the Finnish government following the tragedy that happened in the capital of Belgium, the prime minister said "we stand united in the fight against terrorism."

"I wish to express my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims. An attack at the heart of the EU touches us all," said Sipila.

At least 26 people were killed and 136 injured in explosions on Tuesday at Brussels airport and on a city subway train, according to media reports.

Finnish Interior Minister Petteri Orpo said on Twitter that he has told the Finnish security authorities to intensify the surveillance at Helsinki-Vantaa airport.

He said in an interview with the Finnish national broadcaster Yle that the EU authorities have intensified their cooperation in recent months and weeks.

However, he pointed out that the authorities do not have adequate tools for the inquiry of information due to privacy regulations. Endit
