Xinhua, March 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Seasonally-adjusted industrial production rose by 2.1 percent in the 19-country Euro area in January compared with the previous month, official data showed on Monday.

In December 2015, the figure was negative 0.5 percent, according to Eurostat, the statistic office of the European Union (EU).

January's increase was due to production of capital goods rising by 3.9 percent, nondurable consumer goods by 2.4 percent, durable consumer goods by 1.3 percent and intermediate goods by 0.9 percent, said Eurostat.

In the wider 28-country EU, the industrial production rose by 1.7 percent month-on-month in January. In December 2015, the figure was negative 0.6 percent.

It masked wide variations between member states. The highest increases of January's industrial production were registered in Ireland with 12.7 percent, Estonia with 4.9 percent and Croatia with 3.2 percent. Malta, however, witnessed the biggest decrease by 5.0 percent.

Compared with last year, industrial production in January increased 2.8 percent in the euro area and by 2.5 percent in the EU. Endit
