Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari on Monday condemned Sunday's terrorist attack on the Grand Bassam Resort in Cote D'Ivoire, in which at least 18 people were killed.

Buhari conveyed his sympathy to President Allasane Ouattara through a telephone chat, and condoled with people of the West African country as they mourn their compatriots and foreign tourists who lost their lives in the attack, according to a presidency statement.

"The President assured Ouattara of Nigeria's full solidarity and support as his country grapples with the consequences of the heinous attack and strives to overcome the new security challenges posed by the terrorist incursion," the statement said.

The Nigerian leader urged greater international cooperation against terrorists and their sponsors, noting terrorism now transcends all national boundaries.

"That is why the world has to come together, present a common front and deal with these merchants of evil," he added in the statement.

Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has claimed responsibility for the attack. Endit
