Gaza rockets fired at Israel, hitting open field

Xinhua, March 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Israeli military said Friday night that "several" rockets fired from Gaza fell in the Israeli territory, as a fatal Palestinian uprising shows no sign of abating.

A spokesperson with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that sirens were heard in Israeli communities near the Gaza border. "Initial reports indicate several rockets hit open areas in southern Israel," said the spokesperson, adding that no injuries or damages have been reported.

The projectiles were the first to be launched from the Palestinian enclave since October 2015.

Since the 2014 Gaza war was concluded with a fragile ceasefire, there has been occasional rocket fire from the Gaza Strip into Israel, with ensuing IDF responses.

During the 51-day-long campaign, Israeli forces killed 2,251 Palestinians, including 1,462 civilians, and Israel saw the death of 67 soldiers and six civilians.

The recent rocket fell amidst a bloody violence between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank and Israel. Endit
