Portugal's farmers protest against pig imports from Spain

Xinhua, March 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Portugal's pig farming associations held a protest on Friday in front of the Ministry of Agriculture in Lisbon, with around 250 vans full of animals, cereals and meat on their way to the Portuguese capital.

The pig farmers are protesting because around 24,000 live pigs from Spain enter Portugal every year, according to one of the organisers.

"We are producers of only 65 percent of our needs," the head of the Portuguese Confederation of Pig Farming Association Joao Correia complained in an interview with national broadcaster SIC.

The protest blocked traffic and the police stopped vans from entering Lisbon, with some of them having to stop on the roadside.

The association said thousands of pig farmers in Portugal are unemployed due to the pig farming crisis. Endit
