Eurozone Dec. construction down by 0.6 pct month-on-month

Seasonally-adjusted production in the construction sector fell by 0.6 percent in the 19-country eurozone and by 0.1 percent in the wider 28-member European Union (EU) in December last year month-on-month, figures showed on Wednesday.

Releasing the first estimates on production in the construction sector, Eurostat, the EU's statistical office, also said that in December 2015 eurozone construction fell by 0.4 percent and that of the EU grew by 1.4 percent, year-on-year.

Moreover, average production in construction for the year 2015 decreased by 1.0 percent in the euro area compared with 2014, and increased by 0.8 percent in the EU, Eurostat said.

Among all the EU member states, the largest year-on-year decreases in production in construction were recorded in Slovenia (minus 9.3 percent), Portugal (minus 4.7 percent), France (minus 3.6 percent) and the Netherlands (minus 3.1 percent), and the highest increases in Slovakia (24.9 percent), Sweden (15.2 percent) and Romania (13.9 percent), the office added.
