Competitors of the Clipper World Yacht Race arrived in Vietnam's central coastal Da Nang City on Wednesday after 27 days of journey from Australia.

Skipper Daniel Smith and Northern Irish team Derry Londonderry Doire became the winner of the leg.

"We had a complete mix of everything on this race, lots of wind and then really light wind, upwind sailing, downwind sailing. We went out quite hard to begin with and then the race turned to be a bit of a marathon so in order to maintain our lead we had to keep pushing," skipper Daniel of Derry Londonderry Doire was cited on the website of Clipper Race on Wednesday.

Da Nang is the race's first destination in the Southeast Asian region. The Clipper fleet will leave the city next Saturday to continue its journey.

As many as 700 participants from 40 countries and regions are taking part in the 2015-2016 tour, which includes 14 races.

The Da Nang-Vietnam team competing at the event comprises 58 members from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Qatar, Singapore, Colombia, Sweden, Israel, Mexico, Chile and Vietnam, among others.
