Bulgaria arrests 3 terrorist suspects at border with Turkey

Xinhua, February 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bulgaria has arrested three terrorist suspects when they were trying to illegally leave the country near Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint at the border with Turkey, officials said Monday.

The suspects, who were arrested last Tuesday, made an attempt to go to Syria via Turkey, with the intention to join the forces of the Islamic State (IS), the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior and Prosecutor's Office said in a joint statement.

According to the statement, the three suspects were believed to be Syrian citizens, and had refugee status granted by Germany. They left Germany in early 2016 and arrived in Bulgaria on Feb. 6 via Greece.

Ample evidence has been collected about the belonging of the three suspects to the IS, the statement said.

In December 2014, Bulgarian authorities arrested at Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint two Moroccans and a Brazilian who aimed to go to Syria to participate in combat operations. Endit
