1st LD: One killed, 30 injured in grenade attacks in Burundi

Xinhua, February 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least one person was killed and 30 others injured on Monday morning in grenade attacks in Burundian capital Bujumbura, authorities said.

"At least 30 people, most of them children and women, were injured. One of the injured children died," Public Security Minister Alain Guillaume Bunyoni told media.

The attacks occurred in four different places in the capital, and police managed to seize a motorcycle and other equipment that were used by the criminals, said the minister, adding that one person was arrested for interrogation.

Bunyoni said the security forces had taken necessary measures to track down and apprehend the attackers.

He urged residents to continue collaborating with security forces through the joint security committees.

Burundi has been going through a political crisis since April 2015. The crisis arose from the announcement by President Pierre Nkurunziza that he would be seeking a third term.

His candidature, which was opposed by the opposition and civil society groups, resulted into a wave of protests, violence and even a failed coup. Enditem
