Royal Court Theater triumphs in Critics' Circle awards

The Royal Court Theater in London was the outstanding venue in this year's Critics' Circle Theater Awards on Tuesday.
In a ceremony held at the Prince of Wales Theater, the Royal Court - renowned as the home of socially-concerned theatre productions - won the award for best new production, best newcomer and best designer.
The play 'Hangmen' by Martin McDonagh, the Anglo-Irish playwright who won an Academy Award in 2005 for his short movie 'Six Shooter' - won best new production for the Royal court. The play is a very black comedy about the second best hangman in Britain set at the time of the abolition of the death penalty in 1965.
The Royal Court also saw a win for best designer, the award going to Anna Fleischle for her work on 'Hangmen', and the best newcomer award went to David Moorst for 'Violence and Son'.
Oscar-winning actress Judi Dench picked up the award for Best Shakespearian performance for her work in 'The Winter's Tale' at the Garrick Theater. Dench, a veteran of the theater, last won the award for best performance in a Shakespeare play in 1997.
Kenneth Cranham was named best actor for hist title role in 'The Father at the Theater Royal in Bath, while Denise Gough won best actress for her role in 'People, Places and Things at the National Theater.
The best director award went to Robert Icke for his production of Aeschylus's Greek tragedy 'Oresteia' at the Almeida Theater. Endit
