Albania to profit from helping other countries destroy weapons

Xinhua, January 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Albania may reap some economic benefits by helping other countries destroy their weapons, the country's Albanian Daily News quoted a defense official as saying on Tuesday.

"Based on the structure that we have in our military enterprises, we can become a country which gives expertise to the others, or we can even do this for a profit," Albanian Defense Minister Mimi Kodheli said, citing the country's pilot project with Montenegro as an example.

The idea of profiting from exporting Albania's expertise in weapons destruction came days after the country dismantled over 34 tons of ammunition at the Mjekes explosive materials plant near the central Albanian city of Elbasan, one of the places where Syria's chemical weapons were planned to be shipped and destroyed.

The feasibility of this new idea, however, is questionable given a strong public protest in 2013 had forced the government to refuse destroying Syria's chemical weapons on Albanian territory.

Kodheli also said whether the country can fully enter the business of destroying weapons and benefit from it "remains to be seen." Endi
