EC withdraws authorization of 4 GMOs for food, feed uses

Xinhua, January 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

The European Commission (EC) said in a press release on Friday that it has withdrawn the authorization of four GMOs for food or feed uses.

The four GMOs (genetically modified organisms) are MON863 maize, MON863xMON810xNK603 maize, MON863xMON810 maize and MON863xNK603 maize, according to the press release.

These GMOs, all of which belong to agriculture company Monsanto, have not been cultivated worldwide since 2011, and their commercial phase-out is completed, therefore the company has asked for their withdrawal, said the press release.

In specific, the European Union's official website shows that the authorization expiration date for MON863 maize was this month, or 10 days ago, while the other three would expire in 2020.

Generally, the EU's authorizations of GMOs are valid for 10 years, and GMOs companies should seek renewal of authorizations before expiration. Endit
