Ukrainian industrial output in 2015 suffers biggest drop in 6 years

Xinhua, January 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Ukraine's industrial production in 2015 saw the sharpest decline in six years, plummeting by 13.40 percent on an annual basis, according to an official report released on Friday.

The country's mining industry suffered a major decline last year, contracting by 14.50 percent year on year, mainly due to a 38.10-percent drop in coal production, said the report published by the Ukrainian State Statistics Service.

Compared with 2014, the processing industry shrank by 13.10 percent, while the industries of electricity, gas and water decreased by 12 percent, the report said.

Last December, the industrial output fell 2.10 percent year on year, while it also suffered a 4.90-percent year-on-year decline last November.

Ukraine's export-oriented industrial sector has been declining since 2012 due to the slump of demand for its main products in the global market.

Since 2014, the downward trend has been severely aggravated by the conflict in eastern regions, the country's industrial heartland. Endi
