Blasts injure 12 in Burundi capital

Xinhua, January 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Twelve people were injured on Thursday night in the Burundi capital as unidentified people detonated grenades and other explosives, police said Friday.

The incidence happened at a time when UN Security Council delegates had arrived in Bujumbura.

Twelve people were injured when two explosives were detonated in Bwiza, near the Burundian capital Bujumbura city center, said Police Spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye.

Two other explosives were also detonated at Rohero residential area in the same night, slightly damaging a house, said the spokesman.

According to him, five grenades were also blasted at Musaga in the south of the capital, without causing casualties.

Nkurikiye also indicated that three grenades exploded almost simultaneously at Jabe, Ngagara and Cibitoke without causing casualties.

Nkurikiye condemned the attacks as "terrorism acts" since they targeted civilians.

The renewed violence in the east African nation coincided with the arrival of the UN delegation to evaluate the situation of the troubled country.

Violent incidences occurred in Burundi after Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza announced his bid for a third term in April 2015. Endit
