About 90,000 asylum applications were made in Austria in 2015, the Ministry of the Interior revealed in preliminary figures presented on Tuesday.
The total, coming on the back of the huge refugee wave into Europe, marks a massive increase over the 28,000 applications made in 2014, though remains significantly lower than the record 170,000 applications in 1956 that resulted from the Hungarian Revolution.
The ministry said Afghan nationals made up the largest proportion of the asylum seekers with 25,202 applications, followed closely by 25,064 applications made by Syrian nationals.
They were followed by Iraqis who made 13,528 asylum applications, the only other group to record more than 10,000 applications. Endit
