UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday condemned the terrorist bombing in Istanbul, Turkey, which targeted the heart of the capital's tourist district, calling it a "despicable crime".

At least 10 people have been killed and 15 others wounded in the explosion that hit Istanbul's historic Sultanahmet Square Tuesday. Nine German tourists were among those killed.

Ban sent "his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the people and the Governments of Turkey and Germany and other foreign citizens impacted by the bombing," said a statement released by his spokesperson.

"The Secretary-General expects the perpetrators of this attack to be swiftly brought to justice," said the statement.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the attacker is a member of Islamic State (IS) group, which is blamed for a number of deadly attacks in Turkey. Enditem
