Finnish police uncover major drug trafficking ring

Xinhua, January 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Helsinki Police Department has uncovered a big drug trafficking ring, which imported and distributed cocaine from France to Finland, announced the Finnish police administration on Monday.

The criminal group was suspected of smuggling a large amount of cocaine to Finland several times in 2015. The drugs were distributed most notably in the Helsinki metropolitan area, and also in other parts of Finland.

The preliminary investigation showed that a total of approximately 1,000 grams of cocaine were smuggled to Finland, of which 400 grams were seized during the investigation, said Jari Nikonen, detective chief inspector at the Helsinki Police Department.

According to the press release, the cocaine, purchased mainly from France, was transported to Finland by air. The drugs were found inside the smugglers' bodies.

There are some 15 suspects in the drug trafficking gang. Eleven of them have been detained, said Nikonen, adding that some of the suspects residing abroad were still out of reach. Enditem
