2nd LD: Strong quake strikes off eastern Indonesia, no tsunami alert

Xinhua, January 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

An earthquake measuring 6.4 Richter scale rocked eastern parts of Indonesia on Monday night, but it was not potential for tsunami, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency reported here on Tuesday.

The USGS said that the quake was at 6.9 magnitude.

The quake struck at 16:38 GMT (23:38 Jakarta time) with epicenter at 58 km southeast Talaud of North Sulawesi and with the depth at 10 km under sea bed, the agency said.

Indonesia is prone to quake as it lies on a vulnerable quake hit-zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire." Enditem
