Hollande urges "immediate humanitarian measures" in Syria

French President Francois Hollande on Monday urged the implementation of "immediate humanitarian measures" in besieged rebel-held towns in Syria to prepare for a political and democratic transition.

In a statement issued by his office, French President Hollande stressed that these measures would pave the way "to have the conditions for a credible cease-fire."

Hollande met with the General Coordinator of the High Negotiations Committee for the Syrian Revolution and Opposition Force Riyad Hijab today.

For six months, about 40,000 civilians and 200 rebels are reportedly trapped in Madaya, north of the capital Damascus by forces loyal to Syrian government, while rebels have besieged al Foua and Kefraya, two loyalist cities. Enditem
