Teenager attacking Jewish teacher says acting on behalf of IS: prosecutor

Xinhua, January 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

A young self-styled Islamist who tried to stab a Jewish teacher in Marseille, south France, said he was acting in the name of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist cell, Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin said on Monday.

Armed with a knife and machete, the 15-year-old teenager injured a Jewish teacher earlier on the day before being arrested. He is a Turkish of Kurdish origin, Robin unveiled.

"It's clearly a premeditated anti-Semitic assault. He (the attacker) claimed to have acted in the name of Allah and the Islamic State. He repeated several times to have done on behalf of Daech," Robin was quoted as saying by local media.

In a press release issued by his office, French President Francois Hollande denounced "unspeakable and unjustifiable acts," pledging "the mobilization of public authorities to act with the greatest firmness against anti-Semitism and racism."

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve called the attack a "brutal anti-semitic aggression." Enditem
