Construction begins on widest bridge over Yangtze

Xinhua, December 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Construction has begun on the widest bridge over China's longest river, the Yangtze.

Workers on Wednesday broke ground on the Qingshan Yangtze River Bridge in Wuhan City, capital of central China's Hubei Province. The bridge, the 11th over the Yangtze in Wuhan, will cost about 5.6 billion yuan (865 million U.S. dollars) and is expected to be finished in 2019.

At 47 meters wide, the work is undertaken by the state-owned China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd. and will allow trains to pass over the river at 100 km per hour, according to the company.

Local authorities plan another two bridges over the river in the next five years. Endi
