1 soldier killed, 6 injured in explosion in SE Turkey

A Turkish security forces soldier was killed and five other soldiers and a civilian were injured, in an explosion in southeast Turkey Wednesday, Turkish media reported.

The explosion occurred in the town of Sur in the province of Diyarbakir at noon, following the regional curfew imposed days ago, private Dogan news agency said.

Those injured in the explosion were transported to hospital for treatment, said the report.

Meanwhile, Turkish security forces killed 168 militants from the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) during the ongoing military operations in the province of Sirnak, reported Dogan.

The PKK and Ankara had negotiated a cease-fire in 2013.

However, the truce agreement fell apart following a suicide bombing attack in the border town of Suruc in southeast Turkey on July 20, killing 33 pro-Kurdish and left-wing activists.

Tensions have gripped the area, especially in southeast Turkey, as military operations against PKK militants are underway following the failed truce agreement.

The PKK is recognized as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States. Endit
