Kenya's Garissa University to re-open in January

The Garissa University Campus that was closed in April following a terrorist attack that claimed 148 lives will re-open in January, revealed a memo sent by senior administrators on Tuesday.
Both the faculty and students of the Moi university affiliate campus have been alerted about the resumption of teaching next month.
Al-Shabaab militants on April 2nd raided Garissa University campus where they carried out an orgy of killings that shocked the entire world.
Kenyan authorities ordered the university closed after the massacre and reiterated its re-opening will be done once security for students and faculty members is assured.
An internal memo sent by Garissa University College's Principal Ahmed Warfa said Moi University senate had unanimously endorsed a decision to reopen the University Campus during its special sitting on December 9th this year.
"All members of staff are informed that the senate of Moi University had approved the reopening of Garissa University College for learning to resume during its special meeting on 9th December 2015. In the light of the above the academic staff is hereby recalled back to Garissa from Eldoret," read the memo.
The decision to reopen Garissa University College was made public by Kenyan Deputy President William Ruto a fortnight ago.
Ruto told a public gathering in Garissa town the reopening of the college reaffirmed Kenya's resolve not to cow to terrorist threats.
"The establishment of Garissa University College was in line with the government's vision to expand access to tertiary education in marginalized regions. We cannot allow terrorists to sabotage this effort," Ruto said at a public rally.
He stressed the reopening of Garissa University Campus will restore hope to survivors of April terrorist attack and their families.
The memo released by Garissa University administrators said lectures will resume on January 11 after students and faculty members report to the university campus on the first week of January. Endit
