Uganda's Apolot tops 2015 World Kickboxing ranking

Xinhua, December 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Uganda's Patricia Apolot is ranked No.1 on the World Kickboxing Federation rankings as the 2015 comes to a climax.

Apolot, who defended her lightweight category title in November, said on Tuesday that she is very proud of her achievement being top as the year comes to an end.

"I have worked so hard to stay at the top and will be looking forward for greater things next year," said Apolot.

Last year Apolot won the world title after defeating Serbia's Ivana Mirkov in a continental title fight. The Ugandan has been ranked first in the women's lightweight category by the World Kickboxing Federation since July last year.

Australia's Godfrey Mellisa is second, while Veronika Csillag of Hungary is third and Nigeria's Kehinde Obareh on fourth.

Apolot said she is looking at winning more fights in the nee season. She also revealed that she was happy the government of Uganda through the Education and Sports Ministry had made sure she gets a monthly stipend.

Top Ugandan athletes who win medals at international competitions like Olympic gold medalist Stephen Kiprotich and Moses Kiprop are among the athletes who get the monthly stipend from government as reward. Endit
