Former shopping center burnt down in southern Finland

A building once used as shopping center was burnt down to the ground earlier Monday morning in Nastola, southern Finland, local media reported.

According to the Paijat-Hame Rescue Department, The 1,850-square-meter building was destroyed completely in a fierce fire. No casualties were found, as the building was empty at the time.

Residents living in the neighboring region were informed to stay at home and close their ventilation due to the toxic smoke spreading to the surrounding area.

The fire was extinguished at around 9 a.m. local time (0700 GMT). The rescue team said that the round-off works will continue to the whole day. The extinguishing works will also continue to hamper the traffic in downtown Nastola.

Built in late 1960s, the building occupies 1, 850 square meters. It was later renovated as a gymnasium.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Endit
