Britain's Trades Union Congress (TUC) said Monday that almost a million people across Britain would spend Christmas Day at work this year.
In a report, the TUC said the number of Britons who work on Dec. 25 has increased by thousands over the past few years.
Those on the clock on the national holiday include 168,000 care workers and 152,000 medical staff; 92,000 people who work in the restaurant and bar industry; 22,000 police officers and 28,000 security guards; 15,000 farm workers; and 20,000 members of the clergy.
TUC spokeswoman Lynn Collins said: "Christmas Day is a special day that millions of us spend with our nearest and dearest. So we should all spare a thought for the people who this Friday will be hard at work while we're opening our presents, tucking into the turkey, and relaxing with our families."
Collins said many people on duty on Christmas Day receive low pay, especially in sectors like hospitality and social care.
The highest number of people working on Christmas Day, according to TUC figures, would be in Scotland and North East England where 3.6 percent of people would be on duty. London was expected to have the lowest number of people on duty, with just 2.2 percent of the working population scheduled to work. Endit
