The death toll of a day-long-siege by Taliban militants against a residential complex near an airport in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, which ended Wednesday night, has risen to 50, the country's Defense Ministry said on Thursday.

"As a result of enemies' attack near Kandahar airport 50 countrymen, including 38 civilians, 10 army soldiers and two policemen were martyred," the ministry said in a statement.

About 17 soldiers, four police and 14 civilians sustained injuries, according to the statement.
