3 Saudi soldiers killed in shootout on border with Yemen

Xinhua, November 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Three Saudi soldiers were killed in a fire exchange with militants on the Saudi-Yemeni border, Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday.

The militants, believed to be affiliated with the Shiite Houthi group in Yemen, attacked the border guards in the city of Jazan on Sunday night, a spokesman for the Saudi Interior Ministry said.

The spokesperson did not say if any of the militants were killed or wounded in the clashes.

A Saudi-led coalition, made up of nine states, has been conducting airstrikes on the Houthi group on an almost daily basis across Yemen since March 26, when Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi fled to the Saudi capital Riyadh.

The coalition has said its intervention aims to restore Hadi's authority in the country.

The Houthi group seized much of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, last September, and ousted Hadi and his government.

There have been frequent clashes between Saudi forces and Houthis on the border since the airstrikes began. Endit
