Annual Chinese-Hungarian Friendship awards presented in Budapest

Xinhua, November 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Great Wall Hungarian-Chinese Friendship Association and 11 other organizations presented their annual Chinese-Hungarian Friendship awards in Parliament in Budapest on Friday.

The awards are granted to persons who have done an outstanding job of boosting ties between Hungary and China.

This year's award winners were Hungary's former prime minister Peter Medgyessy, who is also a financial expert, and president and CEO of the Hungarian branch of the Bank of China, Chen Huaiyu, who received their awards from Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto and MP Lajos Olah who heads the Great Wall Hungarian-Chinese Friendship Association.

The presentation ceremony cited Medgyessy's continuing efforts to build stronger ties between the two countries with regular trips to China and the regular hosting of Chinese delegations. It was noted that Medgyessy has been behind the Hungarian-Chinese bilingual primary school operating in Budapest as well as the Foundation for European Health using Traditional Chinese Medicine that was established in 2013.

Chen is a graduate of Beijing's Foreign Studies University, where he was a Hungarian major, which made him a natural choice to head the Hungarian branch of one of the world's largest banks.

The Bank of China has played a major role in advancing relations between the two countries through its economic, financial, and commercial operations, and it has been a firm supporter of Chinese investments in Hungary.

It established its Central and East European regional Center in Budapest in December 2014, and opened the region's renminbi clearing center on October 2 of this year. Much of these advances have been through Chen's tireless efforts and staunch confidence in Hungary, the official presentation statement underlined.

Dignitaries attending the ceremony included Chinese Ambassador to Hungary Duan Jielong. Endit
