Ten tons of frozen food with relabeled expiration dates found in Riga warehouse

Xinhua, November 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

Latvia's food safety authority found about 10 tons of frozen meat and fish products bearing replaced or incorrect labels in a freezer warehouse here, local media reported Friday.

Ilze Meistare, a spokeswoman for the Latvian Food and Veterinary Service, said some of the products were no longer suitable for consumption as they had past their expiration dates.

The incorrectly-labeled products belong to two companies -- Delfa, the owner of the freezer warehouse, and Fris-L, which rents warehouse space from Delfa.

The food authority seized about a ton of out-of-date frozen poultry meat, salmon and pork from Fris-L. The expiration dates had been changed from Sept. 16, 2015 to February, 2016, the food authority said.

It was also established that Fris-L had been supplying out-of-date pork to various food service providers, including a school canteen here.

The food safety authority also seized 760 kg of expired frozen fish products and suspended the distribution of another seven tons of unlabeled or incorrectly-labeled fish products owned by Delfa.

An administrative probe is now under way and the food wholesalers have been required to prove their products' origin and the validity of their expiration dates, as well as to destroy the expired products. Endit
