A court in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City handed down a nine-year imprisonment sentence on a 27-year-old local man who managed foreign-based online betting ring, local media reported Friday.
Tran Long Thanh received the sentence, passed by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court, on the charge of organizing gambling. His father, Tran Hau Chi, who runs the betting ring, is being hunted by local police, online newspaper VnExpress reported.
Eleven accompanies of Thanh and Chi got jail terms from one to seven years on the same charge. And 33 local people who made bets via the ring received from two-year suspension to 2.5-year imprisonment sentences.
The ring acted as a Vietnamese intermediary of a foreign online gambling website named M88. Vietnamese investigators said that over one year of its operation, the ring transferred over 1,400 billion Vietnamese dong (more than 62.2 million U.S. dollars) to M88, online newspaper Tien Phong (Pioneer) reported.
