Azerbaijani president sacks minister of communications

Xinhua, November 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Thursday dismissed the country's Minister of Communications and Information Technologies Ali Abbasov.

Aliyev announced the dismissal of Abbasov in a decree. The president, however, did not provide any reason for the decision.

This was the second headline dismissal in the government of Azerbaijan in a month.

On Oct. 17, the country's Minister of National Security Eldar Mahmudov was fired in a surprise move weeks ahead of the country's parliamentary election.

Days later, several officers of the National Security Ministry were arrested on charges of abuse of power and official misconduct.

Local media associates the dismissal of Abbasov with his alleged ties and cooperation with Mahmudov and intelligence agents.

The dismissal of Abbasov came shortly after he was summoned for questioning by the Anti-Corruption Department after an arrested officer gave evidence against him, reports said. Enditem
