At least 26 people were killed and more than 100 injured in twin suicide bombings that rocked Beirut southern suburbs region of Burj el-Barajneh late Thursday afternoon, LBCI TV quoted security sources.
It also said that four suicide bombers were present in the Burj el-Barajneh region, but after the first two bombers exploded themselves, the third one managed to escape for unknown reasons. The fourth bomber was killed by locals who saw him reveal his explosives belt and shouting "Allah Akbar," or "God is Great."
Sources said "A suicide bomber exploded himself near a small snack on the main street of Burj el-Barajneh and after seven minutes another bomber exploded himself near the main mosque of the region."
The southern suburbs of Beirut are considered the stronghold of Hezbollah, the Shiite militant party which is fighting in Syria alongside the forces of President Bashar al-Assad against Islamic fundamentalists who have threatened to target Hezbollah in his heartland. Endit
