Protest staged in Sri Lankan Parliament over police attacking students

Xinhua, November 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

A protest was staged in Sri Lanka's Parliament on Tuesday against the police attacking students in the capital last week.

The opposition staged the protest inside Parliament over the incident after the issue was raised by opposition leader R. Sampanthan.

Several members of the opposition held placards in protest over the incident and demanded that those responsible be held accountable.

Several students were injured when the police assaulted them last week after the students staged the protest over several demands.

Law and Order Minister Tilak Marapana said that an investigation into the incident is underway with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe appointing a committee to look into the incident.

Highways and Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kiriella said that the demands of the students following the Higher National Diploma in Accountancy (HNDA) had already been addressed and so there was no need for them to protest last week.

However he said both he and the prime minister were ready to meet the students to discuss whatever concerns they still have.

Meanwhile acting Sri Lanka police chief Pujith Jayasundara and a group of senior police officers appeared before the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) on Tuesday in relation to the incident.

Jayasundara and the senior police officers on Monday appeared before the National Police Commission (NPC) over the same incident.

The NPC later decided to appoint a three-member committee to probe the clash. Endit
