Death toll in Nepal's road accident reaches 30, toll likely to rise

Xinhua, November 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

The death toll in a road accident in northern Nepalese hilly district of Rasuwa on Tuesday has reached 30.

Shiva Ram Gelal, Chief District Officer of Rasuwa, told Xinhua, "Dead bodies of 30 passengers have been received so far. The death toll may increase as few other injured are in critical condition."

The overcrowded passenger bus heading from the capital Kathmandu to Rasuwa had skidded off the Pasang Lahmu highway and fell some 200 meters down this afternoon.

More than 70 passengers were travelling through the ill-fated bus. "Some of the injured are undergoing treatment at Dhunche hospital whereas few others have been sent to Kathmandu," Gelal added.

The accident site is some 12 km from the district headquarters Dhunce.

The Kathmandu-Rasuwa road section is prone to accidents due to poor road condition and difficult terrain with number of landslides triggered by heavy rainfall during summer every year.

The rescue operation is underway with the involvement of Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force. Endit
