Real Madrid and FC Barcelona began to pull away at the top of the BBVA Primera Liga following the 10th round of matches in Spain as they both cruised to victory in their respective home matches.
Real Madrid enjoyed an easy 3-1 victory at home to struggling Las Palmas on Saturday afternoon, thanks to goals from Isco, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jese Rodriguez.
Hernan gave Las Palmas hope with a header before the break, but the fact was that the visitors never looked like troubling Real Madrid, who were able to coast home in a tedious second half and save energy for a tough week ahead.
Messi may still be out of action, but while Luis Suarez and Neymar are both fit, Barcelona are able to match Real Madrid's pace at the top of the table.
Suarez and Neymar both scored in Barca's 2-0 win away to Getafe in a more assured performance from Luis Enrique's side for whom youngster, Sergi Roberto produced an assured display in midfield setting up the two goals.
Atletico Madrid dropped off the pace after a 1-1 draw away to Deportivo la Coruna. Thiago Alcantara put Atletico ahead, but a defensive mistake allowed Lucas Vazquez to level with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Celta Vigo move into third after Pablo Hernandez's last minute thunderbolt, which gave them a 3-2 win away to Real Sociedad and leaves Real coach, David Moyes' future at the club under threat.
Imanol Agirretxe twice put Real Sociedad ahead only for Celta to draw level through Iago Aspes, who also netted two goals. The game looked to be heading for a draw, before Hernandez's shot went in from all of 30 yards.
Valencia defeated bottom of the table Levante 3-0 in the local derby thanks to goals from Paco Alcacer, Feghouli and Bakkali, but coach Nuno Espiritu Santo still has to listen to calls from the fans for him to be sacked.
Meanwhile Villarreal turned in a good second-half display to beat Sevilla 2-1 and move up to fifth. Mario Gaspar ad Bakambu put Villarreal ahead, before a Fernando Llorente header gave Sevilla a late lifeline with 15 minutes remaining.
Eibar's meritorious start to the campaign continued as an own goal in the first half gave them a 1-0 win at home to Rayo Vallecano.
Meanwhile Felipe Caicedo's last gasp equalizer gave Espanyol a point at home to Granada who once again saw three points snatched from their grasp in injury time after Babin's goal just before the hour had threatened to give them a much needed win.
Athletic Club Bilbao continue to impress as Inaki Williams scored twice along with Raul Garcia to move them into the top half of the table with a 3-1 win away to Betis.
Finally, Alan Haliovic's goal on the half hour was enough to give Sporting Gijon a 1-0 win at home to a Malaga side that has still to score away from their La Rosaleda Stadium this season. Endi
