Slovakia to decide on deployment of officers to Slovenia next week

Xinhua, October 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Slovak government should early next week make a final decision on despatching police officers to Slovenia to help it to protect its border with Croatia amid the ongoing migration crisis, announced Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on Wednesday.

Fico specified that details are currently being debated with Slovenia, with the mandate of Slovak police officers deployed in the country set to be broader than for those helping Hungary to patrol its border with Serbia.

"In Slovenia it shouldn't only concern the protection of borders from illegal migration, but also -- and this is particularly sensitive -- protection of public order in Slovenia," explained Fico.

"This is pretty unusual that police officers from a different country guarantee the rule of law in a country," added Fico.

A total of 400 officers should arrive in Slovenia as part of the assistance provided by 11 European Union countries as well the Balkans, as agreed to at a summit of these countries on Sunday. Endit
