China's Red Cross extends cash assistance for Pakistan's quake-hit people

The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) on Wednesday handed the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) a cash support of 100,000 U.S. dollars for Monday's quake-affected people in Pakistan.
A ceremony was held at the headquarters of the PRCS in Islamabad where Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Sun Weidong, on behalf of the RCSC, handed over the check to the PRCS Chairman Saeed Elahi.
On the occasion, Sun said the Chinese government and people expressed deep sorrow, sympathy and support to Pakistan after this devastating earthquake that has caused a large number of causalities and losses of property.
Describing China and Pakistan as close neighbors, good friends and iron brothers, Sun said Chinese leadership, Chinese government and people of China on this moment are standing together with Pakistan shoulder-to-shoulder, hand-in-hand.
"Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and Foreign Minister Wang Yi have sent respectively messages of sympathy and condolences to their Pakistani counterparts over the causalities and losses of properties," said Sun.
Vowing to continue support Pakistan in difficult times and natural disasters, Sun said China strongly believe that with the joint effort of the government and people, Pakistan will definitely overcome this difficulty at an early date.
Expressing thanks for the donation, Elahi hoped that the donation would help in alleviating the sufferings of the victims.
"The help reflects that the whole Chinese nation stands with Pakistani brethrens in this hour of need and this would further strengthen people-to-people relations between the two countries," said Elahi.
He also mentioned that the RCSC always remained in forefront to support the PRCS in provision of relief items and health care during the major disasters in the past.
According to the officials, United Nations, United States, India, Iranian Red Crescent, Turkish Red Crescent and Danish Red Cross have offered their helps to Pakistan, but China Red Cross is first that extended cash assistance.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of Pakistan, at least 267 people have been killed and 1,856 others injured, while 11,389 houses damaged in 8.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Pakistan on Monday.
Pakistan's northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the worst-hit area, where 220 people have been killed and 1,656 injured.
However, local Urdu TV channel Samaa TV reported that at least 370 people have died and over 2,000 injured so far in the earthquake.
The country's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif visited the affected areas on Tuesday and Wednesday and personally reviewed the rescue and relief operations. Enditem
