UN chief condemns airstrikes by Saudi-led Coalition on Yemeni hospital

Xinhua, October 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday condemned the airstrikes by the Saudi-led Coalition that hit and completely destroyed the Hayadeen Medical Hospital.

The hospital was run by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) with support from UNICEF and the World Health Organization in Sa'dah governorate in northern Yemen. The strikes reportedly resulted in injuries to several people and the complete destruction of the facility, said a statement of the Secretary-General's spokesman.

Stressing that hospitals and medical personnel are explicitly protected under international humanitarian law, Ban further reminded all parties of the utmost necessity to respect their obligations under international human rights law and international humanitarian law to prevent attacks against civilians and civilian objects, it said.

The UN chief called for a prompt, effective and impartial investigation in order to ensure accountability.

Ban also called on all parties to the conflict in Yemen to immediately cease all operations, including airstrikes, it added.

According to media reports, the hospital was hit by several airstrikes on Monday. However, the Saudi-led coalition battling Yemen's Houthi rebel movement denied that it had bombed the hospital. Enditem
