Spanish home mortgages increase by 25.8 pct in August

The number of home mortgages granted to prospective buyers in Spain increased by 25.8 percent in August compared with the same month of a year earlier, official figures indicated on Tuesday.

According to data released Tuesday by Spain's Statistical Office (INE), a total of 19,272 home mortgages were granted to prospective buyers in August, which meant a 25.8 percent rise year-on-year but an 11.9 percent fall on a month-to-month basis.

The amount of capital loaned stood at around 2.010 billion euros (2.211 billion U.S. dollars), which meant a 26.5 percent increase when compared with a year earlier, while the average value of mortgage stood at 104,318 euros, which meant a 0.6 percent increase in comparison with the same month in 2104.

The INE also reported that in the first eight months of the year home mortgages rose by 21.8 percent when compared with the same period of a year earlier. (1 euro = 1.10 U.S. dollars) Endit
