Roundup: Israeli army shoots down two Palestinians amidst Hebron tension

Two Palestinians were shot dead Tuesday evening near Gush Etzion settlement junction outside the southern West Bank city of Hebron by the Israeli army's fire, Palestinian Health Ministry reported.

The ministry said in a statement that the two men's identities are unknown. The bodies were taken by the Israeli authorities after an Israeli cabinet meeting passed a decision to that effect in October.

The Israeli army said in a statement that one Palestinian stabbed an Israeli soldier at a bus stop after Israeli forces at the scene approached the two men at the junction.

"As the forces approached, the suspects attacked a soldier, stabbing and wounding him moderately. The forces responded to the immediate threat with fire towards the attackers. The soldier was evacuated for medical treatment," the army report continued.

Tension mounted in Hebron on Tuesday as thousands protested for the release of several Palestinian bodies withheld by the Israeli authorities.

According to the Palestinian Campaign to bring back dead Palestinians, the Israeli authorities are still holding the bodies of 17 Palestinians killed in the last wave of tension that broke out in early October.

Families and friends of the young men and women who were killed by Israeli troops' gunfire during October took part in a demonstration Tuesday waving Palestinian flags and pictures of their children.

Following the demonstration, intense clashes broke out in the center of Hebron between Palestinians protesters and the Israeli army.

Other clashes were reported in Sair village near Hebron as mourners bid farewell to 19-year-old Iyad Jaradat who was killed on Monday during similar clashes.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said that 36 Palestinians in Hebron sustained injuries on Tuesday, 25 of which were injured by live ammunition.

Minor clashes were reported in other areas in the West Bank on Tuesday despite Palestinian parties call for a "day of rage."

The Palestinian Health Ministry reported that a 13-year-old child was hit by a rubber-coated steel bullet in the head in the clashes in Tulkarm, north of the West Bank. The child is in a stable condition, medics said. Endit
