UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will travel to Spain and Switzerland this week to take part in a series of events to fight extremism and promote human rights, a UN spokesman said Monday at a daily briefing.
Ban will travel on Oct. 28 to Madrid, Spain, where he will take part in the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Spain's membership at the United Nations, said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.
During the anniversary event on Oct. 29 at the Royal Place, Ban will meet the King of Spain, the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister as well as other high-level officials, said Dujarric. "He is scheduled to speak to the press with the Foreign Minister on Oct. 29."
"He is also expected to deliver a keynote address at the closing session of the Madrid+10: Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism conference on Oct. 28," said Dujarric.
While in Madrid, the UN chief will address students at the Carlos III University as well as members of the UN Global Compact and the civil society at the Caixa Forum, said Dujarric.
On Oct. 30, Ban will go to Geneva, Switzerland, where he will meet with Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, on Oct. 31, and they are expected to speak to the press, said Dujarric.
"That evening, the Secretary-General will attend a Concert for the Understanding of Civilizations and Human Rights performed by West-Eastern Divan Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim," he added. Enditem
