The number of jobseekers in France decreased by 23,800 and stood at more than 3.547 million in September, official data showed Monday.
In its monthly report, the labor ministry announced a 0.7 percent decline in unemployment rate last month, the lowest level since 2012.
On a yearly basis, however, unemployment rose by 3.1 percent.
"This development embodies the gradual improvement in economic conjuncture in recent months such as an increase in job creation and improvement in business climate. This has been driven by reforms we have implemented," said Labor Minister Myriam El Khomri.
"The government's reforms will continue notably by preparing labor laws and new economic opportunities," she added.
After failing to reverse the rise in unemployment by the end of 2013, French President Francois Hollande now aims to reduce the number of unemployed to less than 3 million by the end of his mandate in 2017.
To assist this target, Hollande has tried to stimulate hiring by offering companies a 30 billion euro (33 billion U.S. dollars) cut in payroll charges, improving training, facilitating recruitment rules and pumping millions of euros into financing job contracts in the public sector. Endit
