Cambodia confirms first measles case after elimination

Cambodia has confirmed one case of measles after the World Health Organization (WHO) announced in March this year that the Southeast Asian country was measles-free, according to a joint statement on Thursday.
The statement, released by the WHO and the Cambodian Ministry of Health, said the first case was detected in eastern Kratie province on Oct. 4 during routine surveillance on the virus.
Health Minister Mam Bunheng has dispatched a team to the province for further investigation, it said. "We are taking all necessary measures including emergency vaccination campaigns to stop the transmission of measles virus so as to protect the Cambodian people," he said.
WHO-Cambodia representative Dongil Ahn said the agency is working with the Ministry of Health to detect possible measles cases and to conduct vaccination campaigns in the affected area to prevent further transmission of the disease. "WHO will support the sending of the specimens to the WHO reference laboratory abroad for further testing to learn if the virus is imported from neighboring countries or not," he said. Endi
