Guinea to close borders on presidential election day

Xinhua, October 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

Guinea's President Alpha Conde on Wednesday issued a decree announcing the closure of the country's air, maritime and land borders from midnight on Oct. 11 to 6 a.m. on Oct. 12 when the presidential election will be held.

The decree also rules out the possibility of postponing the election as demanded by some opposition leaders.

The opponents argued the elections would not be free and fair as alleged irregularities were observed in the electoral registration and the distribution of voters' cards.

Over 6.4 million voters are expected to cast their ballots to choose a new president out of eight candidates including the incumbent president. Enditem
