EU publishes roadmap to review nutrition, health claims legislation

Xinhua, October 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Commission said in a press release on Thursday that it has published a roadmap on the evaluation of the European Union (EU) Nutrition and Health Claims legislation.

This roadmap is a first step in the evaluation process and outlines the purpose, content and scope of the evaluation, and stakeholders will have four weeks to submit their comments on a dedicated webpage, said the European Commission.

This evaluation will look mainly into whether the rules currently in place on health claims are fit for purpose to deal with health claims on botanicals.

The results of the evaluation will be used as a basis to decide whether there is a need to review the current rules.

EU's Regulation (EC) No. 1924/2006 on nutrition and health claims made on foods governs the use of these claims in the labeling, presentation and advertising of foods, aiming at enabling consumers to make healthier choices by protecting them from misleading information and ensuring a level playing field for food businesses to operate within the single market, explained the European Commission.
