Slovakia and Poland are against the construction of the new Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, announced Slovak President Andrej Kiska after meeting with his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda in the village of Cerveny Klastor in Northern Slovakia on Friday.
"It is clear to everyone that the construction of Nord Stream 2 will mean the potential complete disconnection of Ukraine from Russian gas, which would be an extremely powerful political weapon in the hands of Russia against Ukraine," said Kiska.
The presidents symbolically met at a footbridge over the Dunajec River that separates the two countries.
"It was our first meeting. It was very friendly, open, and constructive and I'm very glad that we picked this region that borders Poland. There has always been a very close relationship between our countries and this place, too, symbolizes how close we are to each other," added Kiska.
This informal meeting was held before the upcoming gathering of the Visegrad Group (V4 - Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) to take place during Oct. 8-9 at Lake Balaton in Hungary. Endit
