Austria to recommence train services to Hungary on Friday

Xinhua, September 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Austrian Federal Railways (OeBB) on Thursday confirmed train routes to Hungary will be recommenced on Friday, after having been shut down since Sept. 10 due to overcrowding by asylum seekers.

In a media statement, the OeBB said logistical and other technical preparations are currently being worked out, so that express, normal and regional trains run across the border again.

The OeBB had originally cited safety concerns as the reason behind the decision to freeze the services. A spokesperson said inbound trains from Hungary were too overcrowded to be allowed to leave the station in Austria.

It stated, however, that train services from Salzburg heading across the nearby German border to Freilassing or Munich will remain closed despite a request from German train company Deutsche Bahn. Endit
