The Kinugawa River in Ibaraki Prefecture of eastern Japan burst its banks on Thursday afternoon due to torrential rain partly stemming from Typhoon Etau, leaving at least 10 people missing, local media reported.
The record-breaking rain sent a wall of water into Joso, Ibaraki, about 50 km north of Tokyo. Helicopters plucked residents from their rooftops, but rescue officials said they were unable to keep up with the pleas for help, according to Japan's Public Broadcaster NHK.
At least 10 people are reported missing and more than 100 houses have been submerged, said local police. The specific damage situations are not immediately available.
Authorities estimated that the affected area would be as large as 37 square-km. Endi
